Helena, Missouri facts for kids
Helena is a small community located in southeastern Andrew County, Missouri, in the United States. It's known as an unincorporated community. This means it's a group of homes and businesses that doesn't have its own local government, like a city or town. Instead, it's looked after by the county government.
Helena is about twelve miles northeast of a larger city called St. Joseph. It is also part of the bigger St. Joseph metropolitan area, which includes St. Joseph and nearby places in both Missouri and Kansas. Even though it's a small community, Helena has a few important places for its residents. These include a park, an elementary school, two churches, a community center, and a post office.
History of Helena
Helena was officially established in 1878. The story goes that the community was named after the daughter of a man who worked for the railroad. Railroads were very important in the 1800s for travel and moving goods. A post office was opened in Helena in 1880, which helped the community grow and connect with other places by mail.
