Helena Vale, Western Australia facts for kids
Helena Vale was the first name for an important area in Western Australia. Today, this place is known as Midland. The name Helena Vale was used from 1885 to 1901. It was also the name for the local government area, called the Midland Junction Municipality, during those years (1895 to 1901). The name Helena Vale has always been linked to the land between Midland and the Darling Scarp, which is a range of hills.
Helena Vale's Railway Line
Helena Vale had a small railway track called a "siding." This siding connected to the main Eastern Railway at a place called Bellevue. It started operating on 1 July 1896. This railway siding was very useful. It helped move soldiers during the First World War. Troops traveled between Blackboy Hill and Fremantle using this line. The siding was closed on 13 February 1966.
The Helena Vale Racecourse
Even though the area's name changed, the name Helena Vale lived on through the Helena Vale Racecourse. This horse racing track was started around 1896 or 1898. It kept the Helena Vale name until it closed in the 1970s.
Today, the land where the racecourse once stood is an industrial area. It is sometimes called the Farrall Road industrial area or business centre. This area has the Eastern Railway on its east side. The Great Eastern Highway forms its southern border. Morrison Road is on its north side.
