Bellevue is a suburb located east of Perth in Western Australia. It's part of two local government areas: the City of Swan and the Shire of Mundaring. Bellevue sits at the bottom of Greenmount, a well-known hill on the Darling Scarp. This hill was even mentioned in early travel diaries from the Swan River Colony.

What's Bellevue Like?

Bellevue has changed a lot over time. It was divided by the Roe Highway and railway lines. The original Bellevue Primary School closed. Its students joined Koongamia Primary School to form the new Clayton View Primary School. This new school is located closer to Greenmount.

Bellevue was once home to the first offices of the Mundaring Shire Council. It also had a Catholic Church before the current St Anthony's church in Greenmount. The Darling Range Hotel was a popular meeting spot for the community in the 1900s.

Where is Bellevue?

Bellevue is bordered by the Helena River to the south. The Great Eastern Highway runs along its northern edge. Military Road and Cowie Close form its western boundary. The suburb has a mix of homes, industrial areas, and parklands. Most of the parkland is found along the Helena River.

Since Bellevue is on the eastern side of the Swan Coastal Plain, it's also at the base of the Darling Scarp. Greenmount Hill is the main way to access the areas further east.

How Bellevue Has Changed

Bellevue has seen many changes throughout its history. In the early 1900s, there were many large clay pits here. Most of these pits have since been filled in. Industrial areas also grew near the railway lines.

In the mid-1960s, the standard gauge railway was built. The old railway station was removed, taking Bellevue off the railway map. The construction of the Roe Highway also cut through a part of the suburb. The Midland Military Markets, once in the west of Bellevue, were destroyed by a fire in April 2007.

Bellevue's Railway History

Bellevue was first known as the "24-mile siding" in 1896. It officially became "Bellevue" on May 24, 1897. This was an important railway station at the foot of the hills. From here, the Eastern Railway climbed up.

  • The first railway line went east to Greenmount, then Boya, Darlington, and on to Mundaring.
  • A second line went through Blackboy Hill, Swan View, and the Swan View Tunnel to Chidlow.
  • Today, the third and final railway route goes through the Avon Valley. This line passes right over where the old railway station used to be.

During the First World War, a special branch line was used. It connected Blackboy Hill to the Helena Vale Racecourse. This line helped transport soldiers between Blackboy Hill and Fremantle.

The old Mundaring Loop stopped carrying passengers in 1954. However, trains still used the line to Boya until 1962. This was for the Mountain Quarries siding.

Until the 1960s, Bellevue was the last stop for passenger trains from Perth. From 1960 to 1962, a new station was built at Koongamia. This was halfway to the old Greenmount Railway station. Now, the suburban train service ends at Midland.
