The Story of Helensburgh FC
Early Teams and New Beginnings
There were actually a few football teams called Helensburgh before this one! The very first team with this name started in 1874. But it stopped playing in 1882. Another team, Helensburgh Victoria, changed its name to Helensburgh FC in 1885. However, this team also stopped playing by the end of that same year.
The Helensburgh Football Club we are talking about was formed in 1896. This team found its home at Ardencaple Park in Helensburgh.
Joining the Scottish Football League
Helensburgh FC first played in a group called the Western League. In 1923, the Scottish Football League decided to make the Western League its new Third Division. This meant Helensburgh FC became part of a bigger, more important football league!
The team played in the Third Division for three seasons.
- In the 1923–24 season, they finished 15th.
- In 1924–25, they improved to 7th place.
- Then, in 1925–26, they finished in 1st place!
Even though they finished first, they didn't win a championship title. This was because Helensburgh was the only team to finish all their games that season. Usually, finishing first would mean moving up to a higher division. But Helensburgh's request to join the Second Division was not approved.
After this, the club played briefly in another league called the Scottish Football Alliance. Sadly, Helensburgh Football Club stopped playing altogether in 1928.
Where They Played: Ardencaple Park
From 1896 until 1928, Helensburgh FC played all their home games at Ardencaple Park. This was their only home ground during their time as a club.
Team Colours
When the club first started, their uniform was simple. They wore navy blue shirts and white shorts.
In 1907, they changed their look. They started wearing red shirts with navy blue shorts and socks. For a short time in 1910, they tried red and white striped shirts. But they soon went back to their red shirts with navy shorts and socks. These colours stayed the same for the rest of the club's history.
