Hello, Universe is an exciting novel from 2017. It was written by Erin Entrada Kelly. The story follows four middle school students. One of them gets stuck in a well! This book won a big award, the Newbery Medal, in 2018.
About the Story
The story is told from four different viewpoints. You get to see the world through the eyes of Virgil Salinas. He is a Filipino-American boy. There's also Kaori Tanaka, a Japanese-American girl. Valencia Somerset is another character. She is deaf and in Virgil's class. Finally, you'll meet Chet Bullens, who is the neighborhood bully. Most of the story happens during just one summer day.
Author's Inspiration
The author, Erin Entrada Kelly, shared something important. She wanted to celebrate her Filipino culture. Kelly explained that Filipino culture is not often seen in books for kids. She also used Filipino folklore as an idea for her book. Folklore means the traditional stories and beliefs of a community.
