History of Helmic
Helmic started around 1908 as a stop for trains. It was on the Groveton, Lufkin and Northern Railway line. At first, it was called Alabama Station. But in 1910, its name changed to Helmic. It was named after an engineer who helped build the train tracks.
In 1914, a lumber company called Trinity County Lumber Company set up a camp there. This made Helmic an official settlement. About 50 people lived in Helmic then. They had two grocery stores and three general stores.
During the 1910s and 1920s, Helmic grew quickly. Its population jumped to 300 people! But when the lumber company moved away, Helmic began to shrink. The lumber camp closed, and the train tracks were taken out. The town's post office closed in 1933. By the early 1940s, Helmic had one store and about 50 residents. In 2000, 86 people lived there.
