Hemizonia clementina, also known as island tarweed, is a special kind of flowering plant. It belongs to the daisy family, just like sunflowers! This plant is endemic to the Channel Islands of California. This means it naturally grows only in these islands and nowhere else in the world.
What is Island Tarweed Like?
The island tarweed is a type of plant called a sprawling shrub. This means it grows low to the ground and spreads out wide. It has a strong, woody base and thick leaves. When it blooms, it shows off small, bright yellow flowers.
This plant often forms thick, green mats that can be seen from far away. It grows in areas called coastal sage shrub. These are places near the coast with specific types of plants. For example, you can spot it on the east and middle parts of Anacapa Island. Its unique acid-green leaves make it stand out!
Where Does Island Tarweed Grow?
The island tarweed is found on most of the Channel Islands. These islands are located off the coast of California. You can find this plant on all the Channel Islands except for San Miguel and Santa Rosa.
