Hemizonia is a group of plants, also called a genus, that belongs to the daisy family. This family is scientifically known as Asteraceae. These plants are commonly called tarweeds. However, not all plants known as tarweeds are in the Hemizonia genus. Some are in other groups like Madia and Deinandra. Scientists are currently studying Hemizonia. They might move some species into new genera in the future.

Where Hemizonia Plants Grow
The Hemizonia tarweeds are native to southwestern North America. They are found mostly in California.
What Hemizonia Plants Look Like
Hemizonia plants are usually annuals. This means they complete their whole life cycle in one year. They often feel sticky and have a strong smell. Their flowers are typically yellow. These plants are tough and can grow well, especially in the dry Mediterranean climate found in California.
Different Types of Hemizonia Plants
There are about 25 different kinds of Hemizonia plants. Here are some of them:
- Hemizonia arida — This one is called Red Rock Tarweed.
- Hemizonia clementina — Known as Catalina Tarweed, it grows on Santa Catalina Island in the Channel Islands.
- Hemizonia congesta — This is the Hayfield Tarweed. You can find it in California's Central Valley (California), the California Coast Ranges, and southwestern Oregon.
- Hemizonia conjugens—Deinandra conjugens — Called Otay Tarweed, it grows in the Otay Mesa area of San Diego.
- Hemizonia fasciculata—Deinandra fasciculata — This is the Clustered Tarweed, found in the Santa Monica Mountains.
- Hemizonia fitchii — Known as Fitch's Tarweed.
- Hemizonia floribunda — This plant is called Tecate Tarweed.

- Hemizonia increscens—Deinandra increscens — This is the Grassland Tarweed. It grows along the coast of California and on the Channel Islands.

- Hemizonia minthornii—Deinandra minthornii — This is the Santa Susana Tarweed. It grows in the Simi Hills, Santa Susana Mountains, and Santa Monica Mountains. It is a vulnerable species, meaning it needs protection.
- Hemizonia mohavensis—Deinandra mohavensis — Called Mojave Tarweed. It grows in the western Mojave Desert, Transverse Ranges, and northern Peninsular Ranges.
