Henik Lake is a special place located in the Kivalliq Region of Nunavut, Canada. It's not just one lake, but actually two lakes connected together! These two lakes are called North Henik Lake and South Henik Lake. A narrow strip of water, called a narrows, joins them.

North Henik Lake is the smaller of the two. It covers an area of about 245 square kilometers (95 square miles). South Henik Lake is much bigger, spreading across 513 square kilometers (198 square miles). Both lakes are in a remote area and do not have any cities or towns nearby.

History of Henik Lake and Its People

Henik Lake has an interesting history, especially concerning the Inuit people who lived in the area.

Relocation of the Ihalmiut People

In the past, a group of Inuit known as the Ihalmiut lived near Ennadai Lake. In 1949, the Government of Canada moved some of these families to Nueltin Lake. However, they soon decided to return to their original home at Ennadai Lake.

A few years later, in 1957, the Canadian government moved the Ihalmiut people again. This time, they were relocated to the area around Henik Lake. Unfortunately, this new location did not have many caribou, which were a very important food source for the Ihalmiut. This made life very difficult for the 59 people who were moved there.
