The Story of Hennig-Olsen Ice Cream
How It All Started
The story of Hennig-Olsen ice cream began a long time ago, in 1924. A man from Kristiansand named Sven Hennig-Olsen traveled to Chicago in the United States. While he was there, he learned how to make amazing ice cream.
When Sven came back to his hometown in 1924, he brought special equipment and secret recipes with him. He started making ice cream in a small shop where he also sold tobacco. People loved his ice cream! Because it was so popular, a bigger ice cream factory was opened in 1960.
A Family Business Grows
After Sven Hennig-Olsen, his son, Otto Johan Hennig-Olsen, took over the company. This made sure the ice cream tradition stayed in the family. Today, the company is run by the third generation of the Hennig-Olsen family. Paal Hennig-Olsen is the president, and Espen Hennig-Olsen is in charge of marketing.
Hennig-Olsen is special because it's one of the few family businesses that has lasted so long in the Norwegian food industry. In 2005, almost half of all the ice cream sold in Norway came from Hennig-Olsen. That's about 46% of the whole market!
