Henrietta Diana Primrose Longstaff Branford (born January 12, 1946 – died April 23, 1999) was an English author. She wrote many books for children and young adults. Her most famous book was Fire, Bed, and Bone (1997).
This book is a historical novel. It tells a story set during the Peasants' Revolt in England in 1381. For this book, she won the Guardian Children's Fiction Prize. This is a special award judged by other British children's writers. She was also highly praised for the Carnegie Medal, which celebrates the best children's book by a British subject.
Henrietta Branford's Life Story
Henrietta Branford was born in India. She grew up in a quiet area called New Forest in Hampshire, England. There, she learned a lot about animals and how to ride horses. Later, she lived in many different places. In 1980, she moved to Southampton. She lived there with her husband, Paul Carter, who was a photographer. They had three children: Jack, Rose, and Polly.
Henrietta had many different jobs before becoming a writer. She worked as a nanny and in shops, hotels, and offices. She also worked for a charity that helped older people in South London. From 1970 to 1972, she studied to be a community and youth worker. She trained at Goldsmiths' College. However, she did not enjoy this work very much.
She started her writing career when she was 40 years old. In the 13 years before she passed away, she wrote 25 books. These books were for children of all ages, from toddlers to teenagers. Her first novel was called Royal Blunder. Other well-known books include The Fated Sky and Fire, Bed, and Bone.
Sadly, Henrietta Branford was diagnosed with breast cancer in December 1997. She received treatments, but her illness was very serious. She passed away at her home in Southampton on April 23, 1999.
Her Lasting Impact
After Henrietta Branford's death, two special annual awards were created. These awards were started by Julia Eccleshare and Anne Marley. Julia was a children's book editor. Anne was in charge of library services for children in Hampshire.
One award is the Branford Boase Award. This award celebrates new writers. It honors both Henrietta Branford and her editor, Wendy Boase. Wendy also passed away from cancer in 1999. The other award is the Henrietta Branford Writing Competition for children. Henrietta herself had the idea for this competition. She wanted to start it but did not have enough time.
