Walker's North American company, Candlewick Press, released the first U.S. version in 1998.
Story Summary
The story is told by a hunting dog who doesn't have a name. She sees everything that happens during the Peasants' Revolt in England in 1381. This was a time when many ordinary people stood up against unfair rules.
The dog tries her best to survive and protect her puppy, Fleabane. Her other puppies were sadly attacked by a wild cat. She also follows her owners, Rufus and Comfort, who have been taken away. They are accused of heresy, which meant having beliefs that were different from the official church at the time.
The book shows how a mother's love and loyalty are important for both humans and animals. It's a gripping tale of survival and adventure.
