Henrietta d'Auverquerque (died October 11, 1724) was an important English noblewoman. She was also known as Lady Henrietta Butler before her marriage. Henrietta became the Countess of Grantham when she married Henry de Nassau d'Auverquerque, 1st Earl of Grantham.
Henrietta's Family Background
Henrietta was the youngest daughter of Thomas Butler, 6th Earl of Ossory. Her brother was James Butler, 2nd Duke of Ormonde. He was a well-known Jacobite nobleman. This meant he supported the return of the old royal family, the Stuarts, to the throne.
Henrietta's mother, Emilia, came from a noble Dutch family. This made Henrietta and her future husband, Henry, first cousins. Henry's father was Emilia's brother.
Marriage and Children
Henrietta and Henry were married on January 12, 1697. They had five children together:
- Henry (1697–1718), who was known as Viscount Boston.
- Thomas (1700–1730), also known as Viscount Boston. He never married.
- Lady Frances de Nassau d'Auverquerque (died 1772). She married Captain William Elliot of Wells. They had one child who sadly died very young.
- Emilia Mary (around 1702–1712).
- Lady Henrietta de Nassau d'Auverquerque (1712–1747). She married William Clavering-Cowper, 2nd Earl Cowper. Their son was George Clavering-Cowper, 3rd Earl Cowper.
Role at Court
From 1718 until her death in 1724, Henrietta had an important role at the royal court. She was a Lady of the Bedchamber to Caroline of Ansbach. At that time, Caroline was the Princess of Wales. This meant Henrietta was a close attendant and friend to the Princess.
