Henrik Sureni Malyan (Armenian: Հենրիկ Մալյան) was an important Armenian film director and writer. He was known for making movies that told interesting stories.
He was born in Telavi, Georgia, on September 30, 1925. His uncle, David Malyan, was a famous actor. Henrik Malyan even studied chess when he was young. From 1942 to 1945, he worked as a designer in a factory. Later, he went to school for theatre and cinema. He graduated from the Yerevan State Institute of Theatre and Cinematography in 1951. He also studied at the Moscow Theatre Institute in 1953.
After finishing school, he worked as a director in different theatres in Armenia. In 1954, he started working with the Armenfilm movie studio. This is where he made many of his famous films.
His Important Films
One of Henrik Malyan's most important films is Nahapet, also known as Life Triumphs. This movie came out in 1977. It tells a powerful story about the Armenian genocide, a very sad event in history. The film was shown at the 1978 Cannes Film Festival, which is a big event for movies around the world.
In 1980, Henrik Malyan started his own theatre studio. It was called the Henrik Malyan Theatre-Studio. This place was for creating stage plays. In 1982, he received a special award called "People's Artist of the USSR". This award recognized his great talent and contributions to art. Henrik Malyan passed away on March 14, 1988.
