Discovering Henrika Šantel
Henrika Šantel was a talented artist from Slovenia. She lived during a time of big changes in Europe, including major wars and new countries forming. Despite these changes, she focused on her art and became a respected painter. Her work helps us understand what life was like in her time.
Early Life and Artistic Beginnings
Henrika Šantel was born in a city called Gorizia in 1874. At that time, Gorizia was part of a large empire called Austria-Hungary. Today, Gorizia is in northeast Italy, right on the border with Slovenia.
Henrika came from a family of artists. Her mother, Avgusta Šantel, was also a painter and was Henrika's first art teacher at home. Henrika's sister, Avgusta Šantel Jr., also became a painter. This artistic family background helped Henrika develop her skills from a young age.
Her Art Education
To become an even better artist, Henrika moved to Munich, Germany, in 1891. There, she studied at a special art school for women called the Damenacademie. She learned from famous teachers like Friedrich Fehr and Ludwig Schmid-Reutte. This training helped her improve her painting techniques and develop her unique style.
Life and Work in Changing Times
After finishing her studies, Henrika returned to Gorizia and began teaching art. Her life, like many others, was affected by big historical events.
Moving After World War I
After World War I (a huge global conflict that lasted from 1914 to 1918), the city of Gorizia became part of Italy. Because of this change, Henrika and her family moved to Maribor. Maribor was a city in a new country called Yugoslavia, which was formed after the war.
Later Years in Ljubljana
In 1929, Henrika moved again, this time to Ljubljana, the capital city of Slovenia. She lived and worked there until she passed away in 1940. Throughout her life, Henrika Šantel created many beautiful and important paintings that are still admired today.
