Sir Henry Barton (died 1435) was an important leader in London during the 1400s. He held the powerful position of Lord Mayor of London twice. He was known for his work in the city's government.
Sir Henry Barton's Life
Henry Barton was born to Richard and Denise Barton. By 1400, he was working for the King. This job was called "Yeoman of the King's Chamber."
He became Sheriff of London in 1406. A sheriff helped keep law and order. Henry also served as an Alderman. Aldermen were like city council members. He represented two areas: Farringdon and Cornhill.
Henry Barton was elected Lord Mayor of London in 1416. He was chosen for this top job again in 1428. The Lord Mayor is the head of the City of London's government.
In 1419, he became a Member of Parliament for the City of London. This meant he represented London in the country's main government. He was one of two aldermen chosen for this role.
Henry Barton also worked as a tax collector in 1407. This was another important job for the city.
His grave was in the Old St Paul's Cathedral. Sadly, the Great Fire of London in 1666 destroyed his grave. Today, his name is on a special memorial in the crypt of St Paul's Cathedral. This memorial lists important people whose graves were lost. He also has a memorial on a wall in St Mary's Church, Mildenhall.
