Henry Cary, 8th Viscount Falkland facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Henry Thomas Cary, 8th Viscount Falkland (born February 27, 1766 – died May 28, 1796) was a Scottish nobleman and an officer in the British Army. He was known as Master of Falkland from 1780 until 1785.

Early Life and Family

Henry Thomas Cary was the older son of Lucius Cary, Master of Falkland, and his wife Anne. When his father passed away in 1780, Henry became the next in line to inherit his grandfather's title. His grandfather was Lucius Cary, 7th Viscount Falkland. On February 27, 1785, Henry officially became the 8th Viscount Falkland after his grandfather's death. A "Viscount" is a title of nobility, a bit like a duke or an earl, but usually a step below.

His Time in the Army

Henry Thomas Cary joined the army when he was young. On September 13, 1783, he became a cornet in the 19th Regiment of Light Dragoons. A cornet was a junior officer rank, similar to a second lieutenant today. However, this regiment was soon disbanded, and he had to go on "half-pay," meaning he received half his usual salary while not actively serving.

He continued his military career by moving to different regiments.

  • On September 10, 1785, he joined the 10th Regiment of Dragoons.
  • He was promoted to lieutenant on December 10 in the 100th Regiment of Foot. This regiment was also disbanded, and he went on half-pay again.
  • He then joined the 43rd Regiment of Foot on April 5, 1786.
  • Later, he moved to the half-pay list of the 65th Regiment of Foot on December 25, 1787.
  • Finally, on January 27, 1790, he joined the 12th Regiment of Foot. He decided to leave the army as a lieutenant in December of that year.
  • In 1793, he was offered another chance to join the 43rd Regiment as an ensign, which is an even lower rank than cornet, but he chose not to accept it.

Later Life and Passing

Henry Thomas Cary, 8th Viscount Falkland, passed away on May 28, 1796. He was 30 years old and had never married. He died at the White Lion Inn in Bath, Somerset, a city in England, and was buried there. After his death, his brother, Charles Cary, 9th Viscount Falkland, became the next Viscount Falkland.
