Captain Charles John Cary, 9th Viscount Falkland (born November 1768 – died 2 March 1809) was a Scottish nobleman and an officer in the Royal Navy. He was known for his service at sea during an important time in history.

Early Life and Family

Charles John Cary was the younger son of Lucius Cary, Master of Falkland, and his wife Anne. The title "Viscount Falkland" was a noble title in Scotland. When his older brother, Henry Cary, 8th Viscount Falkland, passed away in 1796, Charles inherited the title and became the 9th Viscount Falkland.

On August 25, 1802, Charles Cary married Christiana Anton. They had three sons and one daughter:

Naval Career

Charles Cary had a career in the Royal Navy. He rose through the ranks, becoming a post-captain in 1803. This was an important rank for commanding a ship.

HMS Busy

In 1801, he commanded a ship called HMS Busy. While serving in the West Indies, his ship successfully captured a vessel named the San Telmo.

HMS Quebec and Heligoland

Later, in 1807, Captain Cary was in charge of HMS Quebec. During this time, he played a part in the surrender of the Danish forces on the island of Heligoland. This was a significant event during the Napoleonic Wars.

After this, Captain Cary faced some difficulties with his command and left the ship.

Later Life and Passing

In 1809, Charles Cary was involved in a serious disagreement with Arthur Annesley Powell. This conflict led to a duel on February 28, 1809, where Viscount Falkland was severely injured. He passed away two days later, on March 2, 1809.

After his death, his eldest son, Lucius Cary, 10th Viscount Falkland, inherited the title and became the 10th Viscount Falkland.
