Children Lucius Cary, Master of Falkland

Lucius Bentinck Cary, the 10th Viscount Falkland, was an important British politician and administrator. He was born on November 5, 1803, and passed away on March 12, 1884. He held several key roles, including being a governor in different parts of the British Empire.

Early Life and Family

Lucius Bentinck Cary was the son of Charles John Cary, the 9th Viscount Falkland. His mother's name was Christiana. When he was only five years old, in 1809, his father passed away. Lucius then became the 10th Viscount Falkland.

Education and Military Service

Young Lucius went to the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. This is a famous place where army officers are trained. He joined the army and served in different regiments. He bought his first officer rank, called an ensigncy, in 1821. He continued to move up in rank, becoming a lieutenant and then a captain. In 1830, he decided to leave the army.

Political Career and Public Service

Lord Falkland was a supporter of change and reform in politics. In 1831, he was chosen to represent Scotland in the House of Lords. This is the upper house of the British Parliament. A year later, he was given a new title, Baron Hunsdon. This title also gave him a permanent seat in the House of Lords. In 1837, he joined the Privy Council of the United Kingdom. This is a group of important advisors to the King or Queen.

Governor of Nova Scotia

In 1840, Lord Falkland became the Governor of Nova Scotia. This was a British colony in what is now Canada. During his time there, he faced challenges from a local leader named Joseph Howe. Howe wanted the colony to have "responsible government." This meant that the government should be chosen by the people's representatives.

Lord Falkland tried to include more reformers in the colony's government. However, he did not agree that the main political party should automatically form the government. His time as governor ended in 1846.

Return to England and Later Roles

After returning to England, Lord Falkland served in the government of Lord John Russell. From 1846 to 1848, he was the Captain of the Yeomen of the Guard. This was an important ceremonial role. In 1848, he was appointed Governor of Bombay. This was a major city in British India. He stayed in this role until 1853.

When he returned to England, he lived in Yorkshire. He served as a magistrate, which means he helped to enforce laws in his local area.

Marriage and Family Life

Lord Falkland married Lady Amelia FitzClarence on December 27, 1830. Lady Amelia was a daughter of King William IV. Their wedding was held at the Royal Pavilion. The King himself gave the bride away during the ceremony.

The couple lived at Rudby Hall in North Yorkshire. They had one son named Lucius William Charles Frederick Cary. Sadly, their son passed away in 1871 without having any children. Lord Falkland himself died in March 1884, at the age of 80. Since his son had died before him, his younger brother, Admiral Plantagenet Pierrepont Cary, inherited his titles.
