Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Plantagenet Pierrepont Cary, 11th Viscount Falkland (born September 8, 1806 – died February 1, 1886) was an important officer in the Royal Navy. He became an Admiral and served during the First Anglo-Burmese War.

Early Life and Naval Training

Plantagenet Cary was the second son of Charles Cary, 9th Viscount Falkland and his wife Christiana Anson. His father was a captain in the Royal Navy who sadly died in 1808 from injuries.

Plantagenet Cary began his naval journey at the Royal Naval College on August 10, 1820. He started as a midshipman aboard the ship HMS Phaeton. During this time, he served in the West Indies and the Mediterranean Sea.

Serving in Wars and Missions

In 1824, Cary moved to another ship, Boadicea. He played a part in the First Anglo-Burmese War while serving on this ship.

After leaving the East Indies, he joined Warspite. Later, he served on Wellesley in the Mediterranean. This ship was the main ship for Rear Admiral Sir Frederick Maitland.

Rising Through the Ranks

Cary passed his examination to become a lieutenant in 1827. On December 2, 1829, he became a lieutenant on Dartmouth. He then moved to Prince Regent on November 24, 1830. This was the main ship for Vice-Admiral Sir John Beresford at Sheerness. Cary followed Sir John to Ocean on January 27, 1832.

He was appointed to the new ship Conway on June 13, 1833, under Henry Eden. On March 10, 1834, he joined Spartiate. This ship was the main vessel for Rear Admiral Sir Michael Seymour on the South American Station.

Cary received his second promotion on October 31, 1834. On February 23, 1837, he was given command of the sloop Comus in the West Indies. While he was in command, his ship captured a slaver ship named Ingemane on September 21, 1837.

Cary was promoted to post-captain on May 9, 1839. After this, he went on half-pay, meaning he received half his salary without active duty.

Later Life and Family

Plantagenet Cary married Mary Ann Maubert on April 27, 1843. Sadly, she passed away on January 2, 1863. They did not have any children.

Through further promotions on the retired list, he eventually became an admiral in 1870. He became the Viscount Falkland after his brother Lucius Cary, 10th Viscount Falkland passed away in 1884. However, Plantagenet Cary himself died soon after, on February 1, 1886. The title then went to his nephew, Byron Cary.
