Early Life and Family

Henry Chowne was born around 1613. His father was Thomas Chowne, who lived at Place House in Alfriston. His mother was Rachel Campion. Her father, William Campion, was from Combwell in Goudhurst, Kent.

Henry married Barbara Middleton on April 26, 1642. Barbara was the daughter of Thomas Middleton from Horsham. Henry and Barbara had a large family with seven sons and one daughter. Years later, his grandson, Thomas Chowne, also became a Member of Parliament for Seaford in 1702 and 1710.

A Career in Business

When he was younger, Henry Chowne became an apprentice. This meant he learned a trade by working for an experienced person. He worked for the father of Sir Robert Cordell. By 1639, Henry was working as a "factor" for him in Smyrna. A factor was like a business agent who managed trade for someone else.

In 1651, Henry inherited his family's property, including land in Horsham. He also owned shares in the East India Company. This was a very powerful trading company that brought goods from far-off lands. Henry even helped his son get a job with the company in Surat, India.

Becoming a Politician

Henry Chowne became involved in politics during a busy time in English history. He wanted to represent the people of his area in government.

Serving in Parliament

In 1659, Henry was chosen to be a Member of Parliament (MP) for Horsham. He was meant to serve in the Third Protectorate Parliament. However, there was a problem with his election. It was called a "double return," meaning two people claimed to have won. Because of this, his election was cancelled.

But Henry didn't give up on politics. In 1661, he was elected MP for Horsham again. This time, he served in the Cavalier Parliament. As an MP, he helped make decisions and laws for the country.

Other Public Roles

Besides being an MP, Henry Chowne held other important jobs. From August 1660 until he died, he was a "commissioner for assessment" for Sussex. This meant he helped to organize and collect taxes in the region.

He also served as a J.P. from 1662 until his death. A Justice of the Peace was a local official who helped keep law and order. They dealt with minor legal issues and made sure rules were followed in their area.

Later Life and Legacy

Henry Chowne passed away around the age of 54. He was buried in Horsham on October 22, 1668. He is remembered for his contributions to both business and public service in 17th-century England.
