The Henry DeLand House, also known as the Green Lantern Inn, is a historic building in Fairport, New York. It was built between 1874 and 1876 for Henry Addison DeLand. Henry DeLand came from an important local family. He was known for making baking soda. The house stands at 1 East Church Street, right where it meets South Main Street.

About the House

This impressive building is made of painted brick. It was designed in the Second Empire style. This style was popular in the late 1800s. The house features lovely wooden porches. Its roof is made of tin-plated steel.

Inside, you can find four fireplaces made of Italian marble. There are also two slate fireplaces. These slate fireplaces were painted to look like marble. The Henry DeLand House was one of the first homes in the area to have indoor plumbing. It even had a special system to collect rainwater.

A Look at Its History

Henry DeLand faced financial difficulties. He lost his fortune due to problems with his orange crops in Florida. In 1905, new owners bought the house. They added beautiful stained glass windows. They also installed electric chandeliers and glass lanterns at the four main doors.

After 1920, the house was known as Villa Rosenborg for a while. This was because its owners were from Denmark. In 1920, there were plans to tear down the house. A new trolley station was going to be built there. Luckily, the trolley line was changed, saving the house.

In 1925, new owners turned it into the Green Lantern Inn. They later added a restaurant. During a time called Prohibition, when certain drinks were not allowed, the house had a hidden loft. After Prohibition ended, they opened an official taproom.

A big project to restore the house began in 1976. From 1980 to 2005, Terrence O'Neil owned the house. He was an important leader at the Fairport Savings Bank. In 2006, the house hosted a special event. It was a fundraiser for the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra. Thirty different designers helped improve the house for this event.

Today, an Italian restaurant called Mr. Dominic's operates in the historic building.
