Henry Elmore (December 2, 1941 – January 8, 2023) was an American baseball player. He played as a third baseman in the Negro leagues. His career lasted from 1960 to 1962.
Early Life and Baseball Dreams
Henry Elmore was born in Birmingham, Alabama. He started playing baseball when he was in high school. Henry was inspired by his great-uncle, Jim "Shifty" West. Jim West was also a player in the Negro leagues.
Playing in the Negro Leagues
In 1960, Henry Elmore signed with the Philadelphia Stars. He mostly played second and third base for the team. The next year, he joined the Birmingham Black Barons. This gave him the chance to play with famous baseball legends. He played alongside stars like Satchel Paige and Reece "Goose" Tatum. Henry played for the Black Barons for two years. The Negro leagues ended after the 1962 season.
Life After Professional Baseball
After his time in the Negro leagues, Henry Elmore worked at a company in Birmingham. He worked there for 35 years. He also kept playing baseball in a local league. This was called the Birmingham Industrial League. He played for 12 more years and was often a top hitter. Henry Elmore later got married and had five children.
