Henry Emlyn (1729–1815) was an English architect. He was known for his unique architectural designs and his work on important buildings like St George's Chapel at Windsor Castle.

About Henry Emlyn's Life

Henry Emlyn lived in Windsor, Berkshire. He became a member of the Society of Antiquaries of London on June 25, 1795. This society is for people interested in history and old things. Emlyn passed away in Windsor on December 10, 1815. He was buried nine days later in St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle. A special plaque was put up in his memory there.

Henry Emlyn's Architectural Work

Emlyn created his own special style of architecture. He wrote a book about it called A Proposition for a new Order in Architecture. It was published in London in 1781. This new style had a column that split into two parts about a third of the way up. The top parts of the columns, called capitals, had oak leaves as decoration. They also featured the star symbol of the Order of the Garter.

Emlyn used this unique style in several places. He included it in the porch of his own house. He also used it for the front entrance of Beaumont Lodge, near Windsor. He built most of Beaumont Lodge for Henry Griffiths in 1790.

Restoring St George's Chapel

King George III asked Emlyn to make some changes to St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle. Emlyn completed these changes between 1787 and 1790. He made sure his new designs matched the original look of the chapel.

His restoration work included several parts of the chapel. He designed the screen for the choir area. He also created the organ case and the altar. Additionally, he worked on the king's special seating and other stalls. These parts were made using a special artificial stone called Coade stone.
