Henry Fanshawe (1506–1568) facts for kids
Henry Fanshawe (born around 1506, died 1568) was an important person in England during the time of Elizabeth I. He was a Member of Parliament, which means he helped make laws for the country. He also held a special job called the Queen's Remembrancer from 1565 until he passed away in 1568. Today, you can see a painting of him from around 1560 at the Valence House Museum.
Early Life and Education
Henry Fanshawe was born in a place called Fanshawe Gate Hall, in Derbyshire, around the year 1506. His family was well-known in the area. He went to school at Beauchief Abbey. In the 1520s, Henry moved to London. There, he got a job as a clerk in the Exchequer. The Exchequer was like the government's finance office, handling money matters. He might have gotten this job with help from Sir Christopher More.
Working for the Queen
Henry Fanshawe became the Queen's Remembrancer in 1565. This was a very important job in the government. He was the first of many people from the Fanshawe family to hold this position. In fact, nine members of his family held this job between 1565 and 1716.
Records show that Henry was a "good, true, and faithful" servant to the monarchs. He served kings and queens from Henry VIII all the way to Queen Elizabeth I. In 1566, Henry was mentioned as a Member of Parliament for Kingston upon Hull. It's believed he might have joined Parliament even earlier than that. Around this time, Henry also became the owner of several large estates, including one called Manor of Jenkins. This estate stayed in the Fanshawe family for over 100 years.
Legacy and Family
Before he died, Henry made sure that his nephew, Thomas Fanshawe, would take over his important job as Remembrancer. Henry also cared about education. In his will, he left money to start a school in the area where he was born. This school is now known as Dronfield Henry Fanshawe School. He used the money he earned from his estates to help fund the school. Henry Fanshawe passed away on November 8, 1568, and was buried at St Margaret's Church, Barking.
Henry Fanshawe was married two times. His first wife was Thomasine Hopkins. After she passed away around 1561 or 1562, Henry married Dorothy Stonard. Henry and Dorothy had three daughters: Darraty, who died when she was a baby, Anne, and Susanna.
