Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Henry Freke (born 1813, died 1888) was an Irish physician and an early writer on the idea of evolution. He was one of the first thinkers to suggest that living things change over time.

About Henry Freke

Henry Freke studied at Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland. He earned his first degree in 1840 and later became a doctor. He worked as a physician in several hospitals in Dublin. He also worked at an early hospital for mental health in Ireland. This hospital was first started by the famous writer Jonathan Swift.

Freke's Ideas on Evolution

Henry Freke was very interested in how life developed. He wrote about his ideas in the Dublin Quarterly Journal of Medical Science. He thought that all living things might have come from a single starting point.

Developing His Theory

Freke first shared his ideas about evolution in 1851. He then wrote a more complete book about it in 1861. He believed he had published his thoughts on evolution even before Charles Darwin.

In 1851, Freke wrote a small book called a pamphlet. In it, he suggested that animals and plants had all evolved from a very simple, basic form of life. He even sent a copy of this pamphlet to Charles Darwin. Darwin, however, found Freke's writing style difficult to understand.

Recognized by Darwin

Even though Darwin found Freke's writing hard to follow, he still recognized Freke's work. In the third edition of Darwin's famous book, On the Origin of Species (published in 1861), Freke is listed as one of the early people who thought about evolution.

Freke's "Granules" Theory

In his own book, On the Origin of Species by Means of Organic Affinity (1861), Freke shared more details about his theory. He suggested that all life developed from tiny, microscopic particles. He called these particles granules. Freke believed these granules were like different types of "organizing matter." He thought they could develop into all the different parts and structures of living things we see today.
