Early Life of Henry Gough-Calthorpe

Henry Gough was the son of Sir Henry Gough, 1st Baronet. His mother was Barbara Calthorpe, who was the only daughter of Reynolds Calthorpe from Hampshire. When his father passed away on June 8, 1774, Henry inherited his father's special title and all his family's lands.

Henry Gough's Political Career

In 1774, Henry Gough was chosen to be a Member of Parliament for a place called Bramber. This area was known as a "rotten borough." This meant that very few people lived there, but it still had the right to send a representative to Parliament. Henry's family had a lot of control over who was elected in Bramber.

He was elected again in 1780 and 1784. In 1788, he added "Calthorpe" to his last name. He did this because he inherited more lands from his mother's side of the family, specifically from his uncle, Sir Henry Calthorpe. He was elected for Bramber one more time in 1790.

On June 16, 1796, Henry Gough was given a new, higher title: Baron Calthorpe. This title was for the area of Calthorpe in Norfolk. Being made a Baron meant he joined the Peerage of Great Britain, a group of high-ranking nobles. After receiving this title, he left his position in the House of Commons.

Henry Gough-Calthorpe's Family Life

On May 1, 1783, Henry Gough-Calthorpe married Frances Carpenter. She was the daughter of General Benjamin Carpenter. Henry and Frances had eight children together:

  • Henry Gough-Calthorpe (born 1784 – died 1790). He passed away before his father.
  • Hon. Charles Gough-Calthorpe, who later became the 2nd Baron Calthorpe (1786–1807).
  • Hon. George Gough-Calthorpe, who became the 3rd Baron Calthorpe (1787–1851).
  • Hon. Frederick Gough-Calthorpe, who later became Frederick Gough, the 4th Baron Calthorpe (1790–1868).
  • Hon. John Gough-Calthorpe (born 1793 – died 1816).
  • Hon. Arthur Gough-Calthorpe (born 1796 – died 1836).
  • Hon. Frances Elizabeth Gough-Calthorpe (born around 1785 – died 1868).
  • Hon. Harriet Gough-Calthorpe (died 1813).

After Henry Gough-Calthorpe passed away, his title of Baron was passed down to his next three sons, one after the other, because his oldest son had died young. His wife, Lady Calthorpe, moved to Grosvenor Square after he died. She passed away on May 1, 1827, while visiting Brighton.
