This large property, including the house, other buildings, and the surrounding land, was added to the National Register of Historic Places on January 8, 1980. This special list includes places important to American history. The property is located at 802 Old Madison Road. The house was once the home of Henry Gray Turner.
Building the House
The plans for the Henry Gray Turner House were made by Munn & Co.. This company was a law firm that helped people get patents. A patent is like a special permission that protects new inventions. The owner of Munn & Co., Orson Desaix Munn, later became the publisher of Scientific American magazine.
The original plans for the house were drawn by hand on vellum. Vellum is a strong, thin material, often made from animal skin, used for writing or drawing. These old plans were found in the house's attic and are now shown inside the home. T.J. Darling, from Waycross, Georgia, was the builder who constructed this two-story house. The large grounds around the house are also an important part of its history.
