Henry Hickman Harte (born in 1790, died in 1848) was an important Irish mathematician and a church leader. He was known for teaching math at a famous university and for translating complex science books into English.

The Life of Henry Harte

Henry Harte was born in 1790 in Limerick, Ireland. His father was a solicitor, which is a type of lawyer. When Henry was 16, in 1806, he started studying at Trinity College Dublin. This is a very old and respected university. He was a very good student. In 1809, he became a "Scholar," which means he was recognized for his excellent academic work.

He earned his first university degree, a Bachelor of Arts (BA), in 1811. Later, in 1823, he earned a Master of Arts (MA) degree. From 1827 to 1832, he worked as the Donegall Lecturer in Mathematics at Trinity College Dublin. This was a special teaching job where he taught mathematics.

In 1831, Henry Harte also became a clergyman. He accepted a church position in Cappagh, which is in County Tyrone. He continued his work there until he passed away. Henry Harte died on Sunday, April 5, 1848. He had preached a sermon in his church on that very day. He was also buried in the same church.

Harte's Important Translations

Henry Harte was also famous for translating important science books. He translated a book by Laplace called Système du Monde. Laplace was a very famous French mathematician and astronomer. Harte added his own "Mathematical Proofs and Explanatory Remarks" to this translation. It was published in Dublin in 1830.

He also translated another important book. This was by Poisson, another famous French mathematician. The book was called Mécanique. Harte added his own notes to this two-volume translation. It was published in London in 1842. He even started translating another one of Laplace's big books, Mécanique Céleste, but he did not finish it.
