The Henry Hooker House is a very old and special home located at 111 High Road in Kensington, Connecticut, which is part of Berlin, Connecticut. This house was built a long time ago, around 1769, by Elijah Hooker. It's famous because it shows how old houses were changed and updated over many years by different families. The Henry Hooker House was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978, recognizing its importance in history.

Discovering the Henry Hooker House

The Henry Hooker House stands on the east side of High Road. It is across from where Simms Road meets High Road. This house is two and a half stories tall. It is made of wood and has five sections across its front.

What the House Looks Like

The house has two narrow chimneys inside. Its roof is sloped, which is called a gabled roof. The roof has wide edges with decorative brackets. There is also a small gabled window on the front of the house. The main front door has a small roof over it, like a porch.

How the House Changed Over Time

Elijah Hooker built this house around 1769. It was updated quite a bit in the mid-1800s. These changes are easy to see when experts study the building. For example, a big chimney in the middle of the house was taken out. This allowed for a new, wide hallway with a grand staircase.

Who Was Henry Hooker?

These updates were made by Henry Hooker. He was a descendant of Elijah Hooker, meaning he was part of the same family. Henry Hooker owned a very successful business that made carriages. He owned the house and passed away in Kensington in 1873. The house is named after him because of his important role in its history and his successful business.
