Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Henry Howard, 6th Earl of Suffolk, was an important English nobleman who lived from 1670 to 1718. Before he became an Earl, he was known as Lord Walden. He played a role in British politics during his lifetime.

Early Life and Education

Henry Howard was born in London in 1670. His father was Henry Howard, 5th Earl of Suffolk. When he was about 15 years old, in 1685, he went to Magdalene College, Cambridge, which is a famous university.

A Career in Politics

Henry Howard began his political journey as a Member of Parliament, often called an MP. An MP is a person chosen to represent an area in the country's government.

Serving in Parliament

In January 1694, Henry Howard became an MP for a place called Arundel. However, he didn't stay in this role for long. Another person, John Cooke, successfully argued that Henry shouldn't be the MP, so he lost his seat in February.

But Henry Howard didn't give up! He was elected again for Arundel in 1695 and served there until 1698. Later, in 1705, he became an MP for Essex.

Important Government Roles

Henry Howard held several important jobs in the government. From 1697 to 1707, he was the Commissary-General of the Musters. This meant he was in charge of checking the soldiers and their equipment to make sure everything was ready.

In 1706, he was given a new title and became the Earl of Bindon. Because of this new title, he left the House of Commons, which is where MPs work. He then became the Deputy Earl Marshal of England, a role he held from 1706 to 1718. The Earl Marshal is a very old and important position, often involved in royal ceremonies.

In 1708, he was asked to join the Privy Council. This is a group of trusted advisors to the King or Queen.

Becoming Earl of Suffolk

In 1709, Henry Howard's father passed away. This meant Henry inherited his father's title and became the 6th Earl of Suffolk.

Later, in 1715, he was given two more big jobs. He became the Lord Lieutenant of Essex, which meant he was the King's main representative in that county. At the same time, he was appointed First Lord of Trade. This role involved looking after England's trade and business. He held both these important positions until he passed away in 1718.

Family Life

Henry Howard was married twice. His first wife was Lady Auberie Anne Penelope O'Brien. They got married on September 6, 1691. They had four sons and one daughter together. Lady Auberie passed away in November 1703.

In April 1705, he married his second wife, Lady Henrietta Somerset. She was already a widow. Henry and Henrietta did not have any children together.

When Henry Howard passed away in 1718, his oldest son who was still alive, Charles William, took over his titles and roles.
