Early Life and Family
Henry Ingram was born in 1691. He was the fourth son of Arthur Ingram, 3rd Viscount of Irvine. His mother was Isabella Machell. Her father, John Machell, was a Member of Parliament (MP) for a place called Horsham in Sussex.
A Career in Politics
Henry Ingram followed in his family's footsteps and became involved in politics.
Serving in Parliament
In 1721, Henry Ingram was elected to Parliament for Horsham. He took over this role from his older brother, Arthur. He served as a Member of Parliament until 1736.
Becoming a Viscount
In 1736, his brother Arthur passed away. Henry then became the 7th Viscount of Irvine. This title was a Scottish peerage. This meant it was a noble title from Scotland. Because it was a Scottish peerage, it did not automatically give him a seat in the House of Lords (the upper house of Parliament). In fact, he had to leave his seat in the House of Commons (the lower house) because Scottish peers were not allowed to be Members of Parliament there.
Lord-Lieutenant of Yorkshire
Henry also took over another important job from his brother Arthur. He became the Lord-Lieutenant of the East Riding of Yorkshire. A Lord-Lieutenant is the King or Queen's personal representative in a county. It's a bit like being a special ambassador for the monarch in that area. Henry held this position until he died.
Marriage and Later Life
Lord Ingram married Anne Scarborough. She was the daughter of Charles Scarborough, who worked as a "Clerk of the Green Cloth" in the royal household. This was a position that managed the royal family's expenses and arrangements. Henry and Anne did not have any children.
Henry Ingram passed away in April 1761 when he was 69 years old. His younger brother, George, became the 8th Viscount of Irvine. Anne, his wife, died a few years later in March 1766.
Legacy
A painting of Henry Ingram, 7th Viscount Irvine, and his wife Anne, was created by an artist named Philippe Mercier. This painting can be seen at Temple Newsam, which was the family's home.
