Henry Keizer's Political Role
Henry Keizer became the Chairman of the VVD party on 14 June 2014. As chairman, he helped lead the party. He also shared his ideas on how the country should be run.
Ideas for Elections
In May 2015, Keizer suggested a new idea for elections. He thought the Netherlands should use an electoral threshold. This means a political party would need a certain number of votes to win any seats in parliament. He believed this would make the government stronger.
Focus on Doing What's Right
Keizer also said he would make integrity a main focus. Integrity means being honest and having strong moral principles. He wanted to make sure the party and its members always acted fairly and honestly.
Questions About a Business Deal
In April 2017, a group called Follow the Money (FTM) wrote an article. They raised questions about a business deal involving Henry Keizer. The article suggested that Keizer and his partners might have bought a company for less than it was worth. It also mentioned a possible conflict of interest. This means Keizer might have had two roles that could clash. He was an advisor to the sellers while also being one of the buyers.
Keizer's Response
Henry Keizer denied these claims. He stated that he and his partners had done nothing wrong. He explained that the purchase was based on official reports from independent experts. The people who used to own the company also supported his statement.
Party Investigation
At first, Keizer's party did not look into the matter. But later, Keizer himself asked the party's Integrity Committee to investigate. This committee checks if party members are acting honestly. While the investigation was happening, Keizer decided to temporarily step down from his duties as party president.
Stepping Down from Leadership
On 15 May 2017, another group called SOBI filed a complaint. They sent it to the prosecutor's office. SOBI also complained about the company's accountant.
Keizer Resigns
Just a few days later, on 18 May 2017, Henry Keizer resigned. He stepped down as the Party Chairman. Later that year, Christianne van der Wal was chosen as the new chairman.
Accountant's Ruling
On 29 January 2018, the Dutch 'Accountantskamer' made a decision. They looked at the complaints against the accountant. They rejected all the accusations made by SOBI. This meant the accountant was cleared of wrongdoing.
Later Developments
On 2 July 2019, authorities searched Keizer's home and other places. This was part of an investigation into business dealings. Assets were taken, and a tax claim was made. Henry Keizer passed away a few months later, on 5 October 2019.
