Early Life and Family

Henry Lauder was the son of Gilbert Lauder. His family came from a place called Haltoun. His father, Gilbert, was a "burgess" of Edinburgh. A burgess was a respected citizen with special rights in the city. Henry himself became a burgess of Edinburgh in 1517. This gave him important rights and status.

Becoming a Legal Expert

Henry Lauder quickly became a well-known lawyer. In 1516, he was called "Master and Lord Henry Lauder." This showed his high standing. He worked as a Sheriff in different parts of Scotland. He was Sheriff of Perth in 1518. He also served as Sheriff for Linlithgow, Berwickshire, Roxburghshire, and Selkirkshire.

Joining the College of Justice

In 1538, a new high court was created in Scotland. It was called the College of Justice. Henry Lauder was chosen as one of the first nine judges. These judges were called "Ordinary Lords." Henry was given the title Lord St Germains.

He also became a top lawyer for the King. He was made Deputy Advocate in 1533. Later, he became the main lawyer, known as the Lord Advocate, in 1538. This was a very important job. He gave legal advice to King James V.

Serving the King and Queen

Henry Lauder was a trusted advisor to the King. King James V called him "our loved familiar clerk." This showed how much the King trusted him. Henry was also a judge on the Bench before 1540. He helped lead the Scottish Parliament many times.

After King James V died, Henry continued to serve Scotland. He voted for the Earl of Arran to become Governor of Scotland. He also served as a Commissioner in Parliament. This meant he helped run the meetings. When Mary, Queen of Scots, became queen, Henry was still her "advocate."

His Properties and Legacy

Henry Lauder owned several properties. He had a house in the busy Cowgate area of Edinburgh. He also owned land in East Lothian at a place called St Germains. This is where his title "Lord St Germains" came from.

He inherited land from his father, Gilbert Lauder. These lands included Netherthrid and Lagane. He also received land called Pyttravy. Henry Lauder passed away in Edinburgh on July 19, 1561. He left behind a legacy as a key figure in Scottish law and government.
