Henry Lee (born 1817 – died 1904) was a successful businessman from Manchester who made cotton products. He was also a politician for the Liberal Party and served in the UK Parliament from 1880 to 1885.

Who Was Henry Lee?

Henry Lee was born on November 29, 1817. He was the second son of Lee Lee and Anne Cocksey from Lancashire, England. Even though his family wasn't very wealthy, Henry Lee became a very important leader in the textile industry.

Early Life and Business Success

Henry Lee became a top leader at Tootal, Broadhurst, Lee, which was one of the biggest companies making fabrics and textiles in Lancashire. He was also a director for the Manchester Chamber of Commerce, a group that helps businesses in Manchester. Additionally, he was a director at the Manchester and Salford Bank. Henry Lee also served as a J.P. for Lancashire and the area of Salford. This meant he helped keep law and order in those places.

A Career in Politics

Henry Lee was interested in politics and wanted to help make laws for the country. He joined the Liberal Party.

First Attempts and Victories

  • In 1874, Henry Lee first tried to become a Member of Parliament (MP) for Salford. However, he did not win that election.
  • He tried again in the 1880 general election. This time, he was successfully elected as an MP for Southampton.
  • He served in the House of Commons for five years.
  • In the 1885 general election, he lost his seat and was no longer an MP.
  • He made one more attempt to get back into Parliament in 1886, running for Manchester North West, but he was not successful.

Later Life and Family

Henry Lee passed away on December 27, 1904, at his home called Bedford Lodge. He was buried in Weaste Cemetery. He had married Hannah Dracup in 1846. His daughter, Florence, later became the mother of Frank Lee Pyman.
