Henry Lee (born February 18, 1817 – died June 11, 1898) was an important English doctor. He was a surgeon, which means he performed operations. He also studied diseases as a pathologist.

Henry Lee's Early Life and Education

Henry Lee was born on February 18, 1817. His family lived in a place called Wooley Firs, near White Waltham in England. He was the oldest son of Henry Pincke Lee and Matilda Lee. His father was a captain in the Royal Artillery and later became a lieutenant-colonel.

Henry Lee started studying medicine in 1833 at King's College London. The next year, he moved to St George's Hospital. He later became one of the first surgical registrars there. This means he was a doctor training to be a specialist surgeon. He earned his MRCS qualification in 1839 and became a FRCS in 1844. These are important qualifications for surgeons in England.

Henry Lee's Medical Career

In 1847, Henry Lee became an assistant surgeon at the new King's College Hospital. He also worked as a consulting surgeon at Queen Charlotte's and Chelsea Hospital and the London Lock Hospital.

In 1861, he went back to St George's Hospital. Two years later, he became a full surgeon there. Henry Lee had a long connection with the Royal College of Surgeons. He won their Jacksonian Prize in 1849 for his important paper about infections. At St George's Hospital, he also managed the museum and taught about how the body works (physiology).

Lee followed the ideas of another famous surgeon, John Hunter. Henry Lee wrote many books and articles for science journals.

Later Life and Legacy

Henry Lee retired in 1878 when he was 60 years old. He lived for another twenty years. He passed away at his home in Hyde Park, London, on June 11, 1898.

He was married twice. His first wife was Anne Elizabeth Ellaby. In 1877, he married Marion Hutchinson, who outlived him. He had three daughters from both marriages. Sadly, his only son died before him. Henry Lee is buried in the west side of Highgate Cemetery.

There is a painting of Henry Lee by James Sant at the Royal College of Surgeons. You can also see a statue of his head, made by Thomas Brock, in the college's main hall.
