Henry Man's Early Life and Church Roles
Before big changes happened in the English church, Henry Man was a Carthusian monk. Monks are religious men who live in special communities called monasteries. He was a leader, or "Prior," at two monasteries. From 1534 to 1535, he was the Prior of Witham Priory in Somerset. Then, from 1535 to 1539, he was the Prior of Sheen Priory in Surrey.
After the Monasteries Closed
During the time of King Henry VIII, many monasteries in England were closed down. This event was known as the "dissolution of the monasteries." After this, Henry Man worked for a short time as a chaplain to King Henry VIII. A chaplain is a religious advisor.
In 1541, he was appointed the Dean of Chester. A dean is another important church leader, usually in charge of a cathedral. He also held roles as a rector (a priest in charge of a parish) in St Mary on the Hill, Chester, and Fyningley, Nottinghamshire.
Becoming a Bishop
In January 1546, Henry Man was chosen to become the Bishop of Sodor and Man. He was officially made a bishop in a special ceremony called a "consecration." This ceremony took place at Old St Paul's Cathedral on February 14, 1546. Three bishops, Bonner, Chetham, and Hodgkins, performed the consecration.
For about a year after becoming a bishop, he continued to hold his position as Dean of Chester. He then resigned from that role by May 31, 1547.
Changes Under Queen Mary I
Later, when Queen Mary I came to power, there were more changes in the church. Henry Man was removed from his position as bishop. His predecessor, Thomas Stanley, was given the role back in 1555 or 1556.
Later Life and Death
Henry Man passed away on October 19, 1556. He was buried at St Andrew Undershaft, a church in London. He had also earned the title of Doctor of Divinity (DD), which is a high academic degree in theology.
