Early Life and Family
Henry Neville was born in 1525. He was the oldest son of Ralph Neville, 4th Earl of Westmorland and his wife, Katherine Stafford. Katherine's father was Edward Stafford, 3rd Duke of Buckingham. Her mother was Eleanor Percy.
Becoming a Leader
Henry Neville became a knight in 1544. This was a great honor. In 1550, he inherited the title of Earl of Westmorland from his father. This made him a very important person in England.
Around 1552, he joined the Privy Council. This was a group of trusted advisors to the King. In the same year, he became an ambassador to Scotland. An ambassador represents their country in another country.
On May 7, 1552, he became a Knight of the Garter. This is one of the oldest and most respected honors in England. He also became the lord-lieutenant of Durham. This meant he was the King's main representative in that area.
Supporting Queen Mary
When King Edward VI died, Henry Neville supported Mary to become queen. He took part in her coronation ceremony. A coronation is a special event where a new king or queen is officially crowned. From January 1558 to December 1559, he was the lieutenant-general of the north. This was a high military and administrative role.

Henry Neville married three times. His first wife was Anne Manners. She was the daughter of Thomas Manners, 1st Earl of Rutland. Henry and Anne had two daughters. Their daughter Eleanor married William Pelham. Another daughter, Catherine, married Sir John Constable.
His second wife was Jane, the daughter of Sir Roger Cholmeley. His third wife was Jane's sister, Margaret. Margaret was the widow of Sir Henry Gascoigne.
Death and Successor
Henry Neville passed away in August 1563. His son, Charles Neville, 6th Earl of Westmorland, took over his title. Charles was his son with Anne Manners.
