Henry Wilmot Ormsby was an important Irish lawyer and judge who lived from 1812 to 1887. He held several high-ranking legal positions in Ireland during his career.

Early Life and Education

Henry Wilmot Ormsby was born in 1812. His birthplace was Powerscourt, a beautiful estate in County Wicklow, Ireland. He was the fourth son of Reverend Henry Ormsby and Margaret Sandys.

He received his education at Trinity College Dublin, a famous university. After finishing his studies, he became a lawyer in 1835. This is called being "called to the Bar."

A Career in Law

Henry Wilmot Ormsby had a very successful career in law. In 1858, he became a Queen's Counsel. This is a special title given to experienced lawyers who are recognized for their skills.

He served as the Solicitor-General for Ireland twice, first in 1868 and again in 1874. The Solicitor-General helps the government with legal matters.

In 1875, he became the Attorney-General for Ireland. This is a very important legal role, where he was the chief legal advisor to the government.

Later that same year, he was appointed a judge. He worked in the Landed Estates Court, which dealt with land ownership issues. In 1878, he became a judge in the Chancery Division of the High Court of Justice in Ireland. He retired from his judging role in 1885.

Family Life

In 1840, Henry Wilmot Ormsby married his cousin, Julia Hamilton. They had five children who grew up to be adults.

One of their sons, George Albert Ormsby, became a bishop. He served as the Bishop of British Honduras (now Belize) from 1893 to 1908. Another son, Edwin, was a church leader in Hartlepool, England, for many years.
