History of the Watson House

Who was Dr. Henry R. Watson?

Dr. Henry R. Watson was a doctor who learned medicine from his father. He started his own medical practice around 1851. In 1882, Dr. Watson bought the land where this house now stands.

Building the House

There was an older house on the property, but in 1883, Dr. Watson decided to build a new one. He hired a builder named Henry Rentchler to construct the house you see today. Dr. Watson also raised sheep on the farm around his new home.

What Does the Watson House Look Like?

Architectural Style

The Watson house is a two-and-a-half story building made of wood. It has a special design called "Stick Style" and "Eastlake." These styles were popular in the late 1800s. The house sits on a strong stone foundation.

Special Features

One of the cool things about the house is its wraparound front porch. It also has an overhanging porch on the side. You can see many decorative details, like fancy corner posts and special shingled patterns. Look closely, and you'll spot sunburst designs above the windows and in the pointed parts of the roof called gable ends. The house also has parts that stick out, with diagonal brackets under the roof edges.
