Henry Oswald Simmons, born on July 1, 1970, is an American actor. He is well-known for playing Alphonso "Mack" Mackenzie in the superhero TV show Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (from 2014 to 2020). He also played Baldwin Jones in the police drama NYPD Blue (from 2000 to 2005).
Early Life and School
Henry Simmons was born in Stamford, Connecticut. His mom, Aurelia, was a teacher, and his dad, Henry Simmons Sr., worked for the IRS. Henry has a twin sister and another sister.
He received a scholarship to play basketball at Franklin Pierce University. There, he studied business. While in college, he also tried out acting in theater plays.
After college, Henry worked for a short time at a big company in Stamford. He wasn't happy with that job. So, he moved to New York City to study acting. After getting a few small roles, he got a regular part on the soap opera Another World.
Acting Career
Henry Simmons played Detective Baldwin Jones on the TV show NYPD Blue for six seasons. He also had a main role in the CBS show Shark. He starred in the movie World's Greatest Dad and the TV comedy Man Up!.
His movies include the action-comedy Taxi (2004), From the Rough, and No Good Deed (2014).
In 2007, Henry won the Grand Jury Award for Best Actor at the American Black Film Festival. He won for his role as Dr. Walter Chambers in the movie South of Pico.
From 2014 to 2020, Simmons starred in the ABC superhero show Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.. He played S.H.I.E.L.D. Director Alphonso "Mack" Mackenzie. He was a recurring character in season two. Then, he became a main character for seasons three through seven.
In 2021, he was the main actor in the Ava DuVernay series, Cherish the Day. He will also star in the MGM+ drama series, Emperor Of Ocean Park, with Forest Whitaker.
Personal Life
Henry Simmons married actress Sophina Brown in May 2010.
