Henry Stanhope, Lord Stanhope (who died on November 29, 1634) was an important English nobleman and politician. Before 1628, he was known as Sir Henry Stanhope.

Henry was the second son of Philip Stanhope, 1st Earl of Chesterfield and his first wife, Catherine Hastings. His father was a powerful earl, which meant Henry grew up in a noble family.

A Career in Politics

Henry Stanhope became a member of the English House of Commons in 1625. The House of Commons was a part of the English Parliament, where important decisions and laws were made for the country.

He represented the area of Nottinghamshire in Parliament from 1625 to 1626. Later, in 1628, he represented East Retford until 1629. This meant he spoke for the people of these areas and helped make laws.

In 1625, at the coronation of King Charles I of England, Henry Stanhope received a special honor. He was made a Knight of the Order of the Bath. This was a prestigious award given by the King for loyalty and service.

Family Life

On December 4, 1628, Henry Stanhope married Katherine Wotton. Her father was Thomas Wotton, 2nd Baron Wotton. They were married in Boughton Malherbe in Kent.

Henry and Katherine had two daughters and two sons. Their first son, Wotton, sadly died when he was a baby. Their second son, Philip, later became an earl, taking over from his grandfather.

Henry Stanhope passed away in London on November 29, 1634. He was buried in Boughton Malherbe three days later. After his death, his wife Katherine continued to be an important figure. She even helped the royal family during the English Civil War. Because of her loyalty and support, King Charles II of England later made her the Countess of Chesterfield for her lifetime.
