Early Days and First Settlers

The area around Henty and Merino was one of the first places in Victoria where European settlers arrived. The Henty brothers began to settle here in 1834. Before that, the land belonged to the Indigenous people. The original custodians of this land were the Bonedai Gundigj clan.

Railways and Post Office

A railway station opened in Henty in 1884. It was part of the line that connected to Casterton. This railway line helped people and goods move around. However, the station closed down in 1967, and the entire line stopped operating in 1977.

The Henty Post Office also opened a bit later, on April 16, 1885. It served the community for many years before closing in 1977.

Soldier Settlement Schemes

After both World War I and World War II, parts of the large farming areas were used for "soldier settlement" schemes. This meant that land was given to soldiers who had returned from the wars. It helped them start new lives and build farms. After World War II, about 3,597 acres (1,456 hectares) were divided into 25 lots for these soldiers and their families. This area was known as Hindson's Estate.

Who Are the Traditional Owners?

The Gunditjmara People are the formally recognized traditional owners of the land where Henty is located. They are represented by an organization called the Gunditj Mirring Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation. This group works to protect and manage their traditional lands and culture.
