Herb Boyd was born on November 1, 1938. He is an American journalist, teacher, author, and activist. His articles are often published in the New York Amsterdam News. He used to teach black studies at the City College of New York and the College of New Rochelle.

Herb Boyd's Early Life and Education
Herb Boyd was born in Birmingham, Alabama. He grew up in Detroit, Michigan. In 1958, he met Malcolm X. Malcolm X greatly inspired him. Boyd said that Malcolm X helped him become the writer and activist he is today.
Boyd went to Wayne State University. He earned a BA degree in philosophy there. In the late 1960s, he helped start the first black studies classes at the university. He taught there for 12 years. He also helped create and teach the first jazz studies classes at the Oberlin Conservatory.
Herb Boyd's Career in Journalism
Besides the New York Amsterdam News, Boyd's writings have appeared in many other publications. These include The Black Scholar, The City Sun, Down Beat, Emerge, and Essence.
He has received awards for his journalism. The National Association of Black Journalists and the New York Association of Black Journalists have honored him. In 2014, the National Association of Black Journalists added Boyd to its Hall of Fame. This is a special recognition for his important work.
Awards and Recognitions for Herb Boyd's Books
One of Boyd's books, Brotherman, won an award. He co-edited this book with Robert L. Allen. It received the 1995 American Book Award.
His biography called Baldwin's Harlem was also recognized. It was nominated for an NAACP Image Award in 2009.
Boyd was also the managing editor for The Black World Today. This was an online news service that is no longer active.
In 2018, Boyd received another honor. He got the Outstanding Career Achievement Award. This was at the James Aronson Social Justice Journalism Awards at Hunter College. Boyd thanked his wife, Elza Dinwiddie-Boyd, for editing his books. She is also a writer and professor.
