Herb McQuay was born in New York. When he was in high school, he sang in an a cappella group. After high school, he studied music education at Shaw University. In 1969, he joined the army.
Music in the Army
While in the Army, Herb McQuay was part of the Special Services Entertainment Division. This group performed for soldiers. He traveled to many places like Korea, Vietnam, Okinawa, Thailand, and Germany.
Starting His Career
After leaving the army, Herb McQuay returned to New York. He later went back to Germany and traveled around Europe. He began working in cabaret shows. In 1974, he released a single called "Runnin' Away From You". The other side of the record featured his own song, "Storm Clouds".

Herb McQuay first arrived in New Zealand around 1975 or 1976. He performed at places like Auckland's Tanui Tavern. By 1979, he hoped to make New Zealand his permanent home. He lived there with his family for several years.
