Herbert Jefferson Jr. was born on September 28, 1946, in Sandersville, Georgia. He grew up in Jersey City, New Jersey. After high school, he studied at several colleges. In 1969, he graduated with honors from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York. He also trained with famous acting coaches like William Hickey and Lee Strasberg.

Herbert Jefferson Jr. has been in many popular TV shows. He played Roy Dwyer in the award-winning miniseries Rich Man, Poor Man. He also appeared in its sequel, Rich Man, Poor Man Book II.

Herbert Jefferson Jr. is most famous for his role as Lieutenant Boomer in the original Battlestar Galactica TV series. He got this role because the first actor planned for the part was injured.
Later, in the 1980 spin-off show Galactica 1980, his character, Boomer, was promoted to colonel. He became the second-in-command of the Galactica spaceship.

Herbert Jefferson Jr. has also been in several big movies. He played a news reporter in the award-winning film Apollo 13 (1995). This movie was directed by Ron Howard. He also played a doctor in the movie Outbreak (1995).
