Herbst Woods facts for kids
Herbst Woods, also known as McPherson Woods and now called Reynolds Woods, is a small forest area. It's located west of McPherson Ridge near Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. This wooded spot was the site of an important military engagement during the Battle of Gettysburg.
The battle here happened on July 1, 1863, around 10 a.m., during the first day of the larger conflict.

What Happened at Reynolds Woods?
This small forest witnessed intense fighting during the American Civil War. It was a key location on the first day of the Battle of Gettysburg.
The Battle Begins
On that morning, Confederate Brigadier General James J. Archer led his soldiers into the woods. He had two brigades, which included the 1st, 7th, and 14th Tennessee Regiments, along with the 13th Alabama Regiment. They crossed a stream called Willoughby Run and moved through Herbst Woods. Their goal was to attack the Union brigades waiting there.
Key Commanders and Troops
The Confederate troops faced off against Union Brigadier General Solomon Meredith and his brigades. Meredith's forces were made up of soldiers from the 19th Indiana, 24th Michigan, 2nd Wisconsin, and 7th Wisconsin Regiments. These were experienced soldiers ready for battle.
The Fight for the Woods
The fighting in Herbst Woods was fierce. Both sides fought hard for control of the area. The woods provided some cover, but it was a dangerous place to be. Soldiers used their rifles and bayonets in close combat.
After the Battle
When the fighting ended in Herbst Woods, there were significant outcomes. Brigadier General Archer, the Confederate commander, was captured by Union forces. This was a big loss for the Confederates.
Tragically, the Union I Corps Commander, Major General John F. Reynolds, was killed during the battle. He was a highly respected leader, and his death was a major blow to the Union army.
Today, Herbst Woods is officially known as Reynolds Woods. It was renamed to honor Major General Reynolds and his sacrifice at Gettysburg.
