Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Hereford is a small, quiet place in Meade County, located in the U.S. state of South Dakota. It's known as an unincorporated community. This means it's a group of homes or buildings that isn't officially a town or city with its own local government. Instead, it's usually part of a larger county.

The Story of Hereford

How Hereford Got Its Name

The name Hereford comes from a special type of cow called Hereford cattle. These cows are famous for their red bodies and white faces. Long ago, many of these cattle grazed on the wide-open prairies around this area. So, when people settled here, they decided to name the community after these well-known animals.

The Old Post Office

A post office was first opened in Hereford way back in 1894. This post office helped people send and receive letters and packages for many years. It stayed open for nearly a century, finally closing its doors in 1985. Even though the post office is gone, the name Hereford still marks this spot on the map in South Dakota.
