The Heriot-Moise House, also known as Ingleside, is a historic plantation house located near Sumter, South Carolina. It's a special building because it shows how architectural styles changed over many years, from the late 1700s to the 1900s. The house started as a simple home and was later updated with popular styles like Early Classical Revival and Greek Revival. It's also important because it's a mostly complete farm complex from the 1800s and early 1900s.

A Home Through the Years

The oldest part of the main house was built around 1790. A man named Pleasant Tisdale owned the land, which was about 340 acres. He bought the property in 1787.

How the House Grew

Around 1850, a new owner named John Ouldfield Heriot made the house much bigger. He gave it the look it mostly has today. Later, in 1920, Francis Marion Moise bought the property. He made changes to fit his family's needs.

New Owners and Challenges

In 1986, Air Force Lt. Col. Eric McConnell and his wife Jeannie bought the house. They waited two years before starting to fix it up. Their goal was to make it their family home. In July 1989, they finally moved in with their two children.

Facing a Hurricane

Just two months after they moved in, a very strong storm hit. Hurricane Hugo caused a lot of damage to the house. This meant the family had to do many repairs. Later, in December 1991, the house faced another problem. Some people caused about $37,000 worth of damage to the furniture inside.

A Place in History

On December 21, 1989, the Heriot-Moise House was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This is a special list of important historical sites in the United States. Being on this list helps protect the house and its history.

What's Included in the Historic Site

The historic listing includes the main house and the land around it. It also covers several other old buildings on the property. These include a log house from the 1790s and a small house from the early 1800s.
