Herman: A Community's Unique Name Story

How Herman Got Its Name

Long ago, Herman began as a simple stop along the railroad tracks. At first, the local post office there was called Bellefield.

The name of the railroad stop changed to Herman thanks to a man named Francis John Borgman. He owned a lumber mill and also managed the post office right from his home. In 1898, his son, John Allen Borgman, had a baby boy. They named the baby Herman. To honor his new grandson, Francis John Borgman decided to change the name of the railroad stop to Herman.

Later, in the early 1900s, Frank Borgman (likely Francis John Borgman) asked the United States Postal Service to change the post office name to Herman too. However, they said no at first. They thought the name was too much like another nearby post office called Harman. But in 1920, after the younger Herman Francis Borgman got married, the post office finally changed its name to Herman.
